Apache Commons VFS takes all files, may them be from a local hard drive, from a ZIP, FTP, or a WWW server and gathers them together under an umbrella-like filesystem.

The project implements a simple API that abstracts to most known filesystems and lets Java code talk to files in various mediums.

This allows developers to create their own "virtual" filesystem where files are managed inside the Commons VFS package instead of working with two or more filesystems separately.

The library supports caching and file metadata, also coming packed with lots of examples and documentation.

Supported Commons VFS original file systems:

BZIP2
File
FTP
FTPS
GZIP
HDFS
HTTP
HTTPS
Jar
RAM
RES
SFTP
Tar
Temp
WebDAV
Zip
