eBay Plans to Launch Brand-Oriented Marketplace – Report

The Plaza would be open to big brands, reports indicate

eBay is apparently looking to launch a new project this spring, called The Plaza, which is supposed to be a brand-focused online mall.

Quoting Macquarie Capital’s Ben Schachter, TechCrunch reports that there aren’t that many details about this new project. However, it looks like the site will allow brands to sell directly to consumers using eBay, but in an environment that’s more controlled than the eBay marketplace.

This means that big companies could start selling their products in The Plaza, not just small retailers, as it happens on eBay’s marketplace.

eBay commented on the issue and it didn’t exactly deny the rumor. “eBay partners with brands, designers and retailers – and sellers of all sizes – to help them grow their business. As such, we are always exploring new, innovative ways to help them market directly to eBay’s global audience and connect them to the things they need and love. We don’t comment on industry rumors or speculation,” the company told TechCrunch.
