Moving to meet similar offers by Spotify and Deezer
While Rdio is often touted as a Spotify competitor, it's mostly in name, as its subscriber and user numbers are much smaller than Spotify's and, more recently, than Deezer's.Given that Spotify and Deezer barely make a living in the music streaming space, being far behind is not a great place to be.
Which explains why Rdio is now free in 15 countries out of the 17 where it's available. Rdio already had a free version in the US, but it has now expanded the program to most of the other places.
New users now get up to six months of unlimited streaming in the hopes that some of them will get hooked and start paying once the free period is over.
Spotify already does the same, it's free for a year or so, Deezer recently unveiled a free tier as well, also working for a year. Still, it's a good start by Rdio.
The new free tier is available in the UK, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
