After years of speculation, Google Drive has arrived. It's here, it's working and it's not that original. But now that it is here, something else has to go. Drive has evolved out of Docs, in fact, it's just Docs with a new logo and a desktop client.

Precisely because Drive is just Docs with a new logo, Docs is being phased out. The site still works for now and will continue to work for months, but Google is pushing users away from the Docs URL and app and towards Drive.

For users, the differences are minimal, they get a new logo and name, but everything else is mostly the same. Those that have started using Drive, either the site or the app, are already redirected to the drive.google.com URL if the try to visit Docs. Those that haven't tried out Drive are now being notified that they will be "upgraded" soon.
