Gmail Turns 9 – Anniversary Infographic

Gmail was launched on April Fools day nine years ago

  Gmail is nine years old
Gmail was launched nine years ago, if you needed a reminder of how old you are. It's hard to imagine Google without Gmail these days, but the project started out as an experiment, put together by a few people during their 20 percent time.

Gmail was launched nine years ago, if you needed a reminder of how old you are. It's hard to imagine Google without Gmail these days, but the project started out as an experiment, put together by a few people during their 20 percent time.

Since launch, Gmail has grown to one of the largest if not the largest webmail client in the world and its popularity doesn't show signs of dropping.

Gmail landed on April 1, 2004 and, unlike most of Google's announcements on that date, this wasn't an April Fools prank.

At the time, it offered an unheard of 1 GB of free storage while being faster and smarter than anyone around.

These days, there's less to differentiate Gmail from its competitors like Hotmail/Live Mail/Outlook and Yahoo Mail, if only because its competitors have gotten really good at copying the parts that worked.

To celebrate the ninth birthday, albeit a bit late, the Gmail team put together an infographic of the road so far.
