Doge Vault Confirms Attack, Says Most Data Was Destroyed

There is still an off-site backup of existing wallet data which will be restored

It’s confirmed – Doge Vault was compromised by attackers, which resulted in a service disruption and tampering with wallet funds.

The operators of the Dogecoin wallet have been working to address the issue, shutting down the site and asking members not to deposit any funds to Doge Vault.

“As soon as the administrator of Doge Vault was alerted, the service was halted,” a message posted by the company reads. However, “the attackers had already accessed and destroyed all data on the hosted virtual machines,” comes the sad news.

Doge Vault is currently working to identify the extent of the attack and the potential impact on user’s funds, including salvaging existing wallet data from an off-site backup. “We will also closely be investigating potential attack vectors, and determining the security breach which enabled the attacker’s to compromise the service,” the company said.

The Doge Vault site went down about the same time that a customer noticed that his entire balance of 950,000 dogecoins was transferred to another address. He posted the issue on Reddit, where he’s been making updates on the matter.

One media report indicates that the missing coins were aggregated in a mega wallet containing some 111 million doges at one point.

It’s unclear whether people’s wallets will remain intact even after Dove Vault restores customer data. The company has promised more updates in the next couple of days.
